SRV, which is an abbreviation for Service, is a DNS record, which enables you to use a domain name for a specific service different from an Internet site. By setting up a few SRV records, you can use the domain address with different companies and direct it to numerous servers at a time, each server handling a different service. You are able to specify the port number for the connection to each machine, so there will not be any interference. You can even set individual priorities and weight for 2 records that are used for the same service, but direct to different servers for redundancy or load balancing. With an SRV record you can use your domain address or a subdomain under it for a Voice-Over-IP server, for instance, and have the real software running on various machines with different companies. Which one a client of yours is going to use is determined by the priority and weight values that you've set.
SRV Records in Cloud Hosting
If you host a domain name in a cloud hosting account from our company and we manage the DNS records for it, you will be able to create a new SRV record with just a few mouse clicks inside the DNS Records area of your Hepsia Control Panel. Our easy to work with interface makes it more simple to set up a new record in comparison to other hosting Control Panels, so if you require an SRV record, you'll only have to fill a couple of boxes and you'll be set. This includes the protocol and also the port number, the value i.e. the actual record, the priority plus the weight. For the last two you can set any value in between 1 and 100 based on which server you'd like customers to access first or what instructions the other provider has given you. As an additional option, you can select how long this record is going to be active after you edit it or delete it - the so-called Time To Live time, which is measured in seconds. If you're not asked otherwise, you could leave the default value there.
SRV Records in Semi-dedicated Servers
Since we understand how irritating it can be to deal with DNS records, we are going to give you an easy-to-use DNS management tool as an element of our custom Hepsia CP, so when you host your domains inside a semi-dedicated server account from us, you will be able to set up an SRV record without complications. We have a step-by-step guide, that will make things that much easier. Using a user-friendly interface, you'll need to enter the details that the other company has supplied you with - protocol, port number and service. Unless they have given you specific recommendations to change the priority and / or the weight values, you could leave these two options as they are and your new record will go live in a couple of minutes. The Time To Live option (TTL) could also be set to a custom value, but typically the standard value of 3600 seconds is used for the majority of records. This value displays the time the record will keep existing after it is edited or deleted.
